With this month marking the start of a second year of issues I thought it appropriate to do some musing on the subjects of time and aging. | ||||
If getting older was really so much of a problem, less people would do it. It is after all, better than the alternative. Generally, no-one wants to be the age they are. There are approximately three attitudes: The term mature suggests that a person has gone through the wildness of youth, has developed responsible attitudes, and now has a character worthy of respect. In a cheese however, it generally suggests 'smelly'. Time is our ancestors' nuclear weaponry. It is purely a human concept. There is no such thing as time in any real sense. It cannot be touched, detected, held back, moved around, it is no more than an invention of man. Like nuclear weapons though, having been invented, we cannot un-invent time without destroying the world as we know it. If your school days really were the best days of your life, then the suicide rates would dramatically increase shortly after this time. There is nothing like the present, balanced as it is between two extremes. On the one hand, we have the past. A series of events, the sum total of which has resulted in the creation of now. All that has passed is irrevocably fixed into being. On the other hand, we are faced with the future. An infinite realm of possibilities from which we all must make our choices. This means that now is the most important time, and always will be. Everything that has gone before has been leading up to exactly this point in time, and exerything to come will be based on what we do now. |
